In macro work the lens is the single most important decision. Depth of field at macro distances is extremely shallow. Stopping down (higher f-number) increases the in-focus zone, but diffraction can reduce sharpness at very small apertures. Many macro shooters combine apertures in the f/5.6–f/16 range with these techniques:

  • Focus stacking — capture a series of images at different focus distances and blend them in software to get greater apparent depth of field.
  • Use a rail or tripod to move the camera precisely between frames for stacking.
  • Manual focus and live-view magnification give fine control when working at 1:1 magnification.

Autofocus can struggle with tiny subjects and shallow depth of field. Many macro photographers prefer manual focus for critical work. Lighting: more important than camera body

In-body stabilization is helpful when shooting handheld, but for serious macro work a stable platform is still the best approach. Weather sealing and durable construction are worth considering if you plan to work outdoors in damp or dusty conditions.

Budget and ergonomics

Decide which trade-offs are acceptable: a lower-cost camera with a high-quality macro lens is often better than a high-end camera with a mediocre lens. Consider size, weight and how you’ll use the camera—offhand macro, studio product work, or field insect photography all favor different gear choices.
