Silicone is a polymer that is made by repeating silicon and oxygen chains. It is also referred to as polysiloxane. They are primarily used in sealants, adhesives, lubricants, medications, kitchenware, thermal insulation, and electrical insulation.
The main types of silicones are Oil, silicone grease, silicone rubber, silicone resin, and silicone caulk. It is composed of silicon, oxygen, carbon, hydrogen atoms, and innocuous compounds.
The production process of silicone starts by heating a significant volume of quartz sand at a temperature high above 1800 degrees Celsius to obtain silicon from silica.
To create silicone, the resultant powder is heated and mixed with methyl chloride. Heat is applied to the two components, which react to create methyl chlorosilane, a combination of many distinct compounds, the most significant of which is dimethyldichlorosilane because it is the main silicone component.
Dimethyldichlorosilane can be produced by dissolving methyl chlorosilane into its component parts and converting each one to silicone.
Dimethyldichlorosilane, after distillation, separates into disilanol and hydrochloric acid. As a catalyst, hydrochloric acid transforms disilanol into poly dimethyl siloxane. Poly dimethyl siloxane has a siloxane bond, which is the fundamental component of silicone.
China, Russia, Brazil, and Norway are the top silicone-producing countries.
